CHICAGO - A judge threw out Illinois' law placing caps on some medical malpractice lawsuit awards Tuesday, reigniting debate over one of the Legislature's most contentious issues.

A judge in Cook County Circuit Court on Monday approved a $4 million medical malpractice settlement on behalf of the family of an Antioch dentist who died of clots blocking blood flow, while being cared for at Lutheran General Hospital in 2002.
