Democrats thwart malpractice bill
Democrats in the House again defeated an attempt by Republicans to revive a bill aimed at reforming the state's medical malpractice laws. The reforms are backed by Gov. Linda Lingle, who urged lawmakers this week to keep the measure alive.

The Senate on Thursday gave initial backing to a bill that would increase the amount juries can award in some medical malpractice suits, a move Republicans said could make doctors stop practicing and make health care more expensive.
