Widow Fights Cap On Medical Malpractice Pain and Suffering Awards
It has been just over a year since Mary Steinberg's husband died. She has turned into an activist - against capping medical malpractice awards at 250-thousand dollars for pain-and-suffering.
Controversy continues in post-tort reform era
Toward the beginning of the decade, Texas Medical Liability Trust, a provider of medical malpractice insurance to health care professionals, was in a slump. So was the whole medical malpractice insurance industry in Texas. Damages awarded in lawsuits were crushing companies' ability to stay solvent. And to stay afloat, many were raising premiums sky high for doctors.
The U.S. Senate has declared this week, "Health Week," with a focus on medical malpractice reform, among other items.
