GOP Candidate Romney Calls for Cap on Medical Malpractice Costs
In an Iowa medical school address focusing on health care, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney last week called for placing federal caps on non-economic and punitive damages in medical malpractice lawsuits. Said Romney, "These lottery-sized awards and frivolous lawsuits may enrich the trial lawyers but they put a heavy burden on doctors, hospitals and the entire health care system."
Attorney David Leneghan, who was hit with a $6.4 million legal malpractice verdict last week, received a reprieve from a punitive damages trial that was scheduled to begin this week in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court.
Gov: Pa. Medical Malpractice Costs Drop
The amount of money paid by a state medical malpractice insurance fund will decline for a fourth straight year, a sign that the state's malpractice problem is improving, Gov. Ed Rendell said Wednesday.
