D.C. Malpractice Awards Decline, New Study Says
Payments to patients who sue doctors in the District have declined dramatically, even as doctors and politicians have blamed skyrocketing jury awards for driving up the cost of malpractice insurance and driving doctors out of business, according to a study released yesterday.

Rate increases, stricter underwriting standards and continued business restructuring boosted East Lansing-based American Physicians Capital Inc.'s fourth quarter earnings from $102,000 in 2003 to $6.5 million in 2004.
Witness accuses IHC of improper pressure
An expert witness in a medical malpractice case in 4th District Court in Provo has asked to withdraw because of pressure on his wife from Intermountain Health Care.Dr. John R. Marshall asked to withdraw after he said his wife, Elaine, told him she felt intimidated by IHC, one of the defendants in the case.
