Insurers put under spotlight in first House malpractice hearing
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - In a battle usually seen as trial lawyers versus doctors, state lawmakers probing the cause of soaring medical malpractice costs turned the spotlight on insurance companies Wednesday.
Doctors' insurance rates stay stable
For the second year in a row, Illinois' largest insurer of physicians has announced its base premium rates will not go up -- the result, many say, of the state's stabilized legal environment brought by a medical malpractice law in 2005 that capped awards for "pain and suffering." Tort reforms are the best proven instrument for reducing medical liability insurance premium growth, according to a new study conducted by Stanford University Professor Daniel P. Kessler, JD, PhD, who also serves as a research associate for the National Bureau of Economic Research in its Health Care and Law and Economics programs, and funded by the Physician Insurers Association of America .
