SJC: Gay couples can’t claim past benefits

Marriage benefits for gay couples can’t be applied retroactively to the time before same-sex marriage was legalized in Massachusetts, the state’s highest court ruled Thursday. The Supreme Judicial Court issued the ruling as part of a malpractice case brought by Cynthia Kalish and Michelle Charron, who was diagnosed with breast cancer a year before the couple married in 2004.
