In an Iowa medical school address focusing on health care, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney last week called for placing federal caps on non-economic and punitive damages in medical malpractice lawsuits. Said Romney, “These lottery-sized awards and frivolous lawsuits may enrich the trial lawyers but they put a heavy burden on doctors, hospitals and the entire health care system.”
