Expert witness needn’t be a specialist, but must be present

If a brain surgeon stands accused of malpractice, must the experts who testify at the trial be brain surgeons, too? Or is it enough that expert witnesses be knowledgeable about the particular area of medicine in question, even if they are not formally certified in it?
